Future Energy Global provides Microsoft with supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel certificates

REDMOND, WASHINGTON, March 25, 2025 – Future Energy Global will supply Microsoft with Scope 3 certificates derived from airline purchases of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This agreement is as part of Microsoft’s ongoing drive to reach net zero emissions by 2030.

Headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, Future Energy Global works with leading airlines worldwide to source SAF and to develop markets in SAF credits. In this case, Future Energy Global is providing Microsoft with three tranches of Scope 3 credits, developed in conjunction with its airline partners such as Cathay Pacific.

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol defines different “scopes” of responsibility for emissions. The emissions from a flight fall under an airline’s direct responsibility (“Scope 1”), but a company with staff flying for business on that flight is responsible for its staff’s share of the flight’s emissions under “Scope 3” (indirect emissions).

When a company like Microsoft purchases and retires SAF-derived Scope 3 certificates, it contributes to the SAF premium for airlines and thus enables the faster ramp-up of SAF production. SAF – made from crops, wastes, or renewable electricity – is one of the largest contributors to the aviation industry’s net-zero goal and is expected to account for about 2/3 of the necessary emissions reduction, however, SAF is more expensive than conventional aviation fuel today.

“Microsoft supports the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel on a global basis to help reduce our worldwide business travel emissions ,” said Katie Ross, director, carbon reduction strategy & market development, Microsoft. “We appreciate Future Energy Global’s expertise and diligence in providing SAF certificates and their work in development of the wider eco-system required to scale SAF.”

“Future Energy Global was founded with the aim of scaling SAF production by building a collaborative ecosystem involving all aviation stakeholders,” said Future Energy Global CEO Natasha Mann. “When Microsoft acquires SAF Scope 3 certificates like these, it’s sending a strong demand signal for SAF. We’re proud to have designed a Scope 3 certificate transaction for Microsoft, in conjunction with our airline partners like Cathay Pacific, that not only helps Microsoft cut its emissions but forges bonds between stakeholders that will bring aviation closer to net-zero.”
